This collection consists of family histories and biographies of the Bernhisel and Van Orden families and numerous other individuals of Lewiston, Utah; a town history of Lewiston, Utah, by John Milton Bernhisel; and one by the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Also included are a diary by James Holmes and miscellaneous correspondence of the Bernhisel family. All of these items were compilled into this collection by Harris Fay Bernhisel.

John Milton Bernhisel III (1878-1957) was born in Lewiston, Utah. In 1908-1910 he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints in Liverpool, England. During his life Bernhisel practiced dentistry in Lewiston. He also served three terms as mayor of Lewiston and as the town's postmaster for fourteen years.
